Moab, Utah

September 2001

Mountain Bikers' Heaven

On the edge of a flat, boring desert...

Moab rises majestically from the horizon.

The area has served as the backdrop for

"Thelma and Louise," "City Slickers II"

and countless SUV commercials.

The middle-of-nowhere town enjoys moderate affluence

thanks in part to the mountain biking tourist industry.

And its priorities are squarely in place.

This marquis for the Best Western hotel

welcomes visitors with three reasons

to love our great nation.

Here's my bike for the week, a rented jobbie

with front and rear suspension--

essential for handling the rocky off-road terrain.

Well equipped and feeling invincible,

I catch more than 1,500 feet of air as I fly off Porcupine Rim.

.

I learn too late that caution is advised.

Dave, a more experienced rider,

negotiates Slick Rock trail with great aplomb.

But he's no navigator.

He insists on using an outdated guide book...

Leading us to the only swamp in the desert.

Later that night at our campsite, things get tense.

Here's Dave cooking dinner for one...

As I search for PowerBars in the back of the truck.

The next day, we put aside our differences

and bond in our common disdain for

people who don't ride bicycles.

The guys driving these Jeeps are accompanied

by the only straight females in town, but we

pretend not to notice.

There's too much beautiful scenery to care.
